Advice For Parents & Carers
There is rarely a day that goes by without Health and/or Social Care being in the news. Encouraging your child to read and discuss relevant BBC News articles will help develop their reading skills, while giving them an insight into current affairs in the sector, including medical break-throughs, the experiences of individuals with different health conditions and the challenges currently facing the sector. BBC New articles relating to Health can be found here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health.
In Health and Social Care at SLS there are some terms that come up repeatedly, so are useful for you to be aware of in order to support your child:
PIES development: this refers to physical, intellectual, emotional and social development.
Life stages: these include infancy (0-2 years), early childhood (3-8 years), adolescence (9-18 years), early adulthood (19-45 years), middle adulthood (46-65 years) and later adulthood (65 years and over).
As well as completing their weekly Knowledge Organiser tasks, students will also benefit from speaking with individuals are different life stages. For example, if students have family members who are willing to speak to them about what it’s like to be at their life stage, including both positives and challenges, this would be a very useful insight to the student.
Finally, if any parents/carers work within Health and/or Social Care and would be happy to be a guest speaker for our students, then please do get in touch.
