School Blog, week ending 23rd January

Thank you to Canterbury Christ Church University for delivering such a relevant and inspirational programme of higher education sessions tailored to students in Years 7, 8 and 9. Our Careers Programme provides all students with every opportunity to evaluate a broad range of potential post-16 options to explore all future avenues available to them. Students are encouraged to consider their interests and strengths and to take part in new clubs and ‘taster sessions’ to help inform and shape their career options and personal growth.

Rachel and Finley from CCCU commented “Stone Lodge students were fantastic! So enthusiastic and asked really great questions to make sure they got the most out of the session”

Year 9 – Why go to University? CCCU delivered a compelling session ‘unlocking opportunities for your future’.

Year 8 – Your Journey to University – A session discussing the value of early planning for the future.

Year 7 – Introduction to further education – Skills beyond academics .. Personal growth and development, learn independence and critical thinking.

Our Careers Programme introduces students to Unifrog, the universal destinations platform. Unifrog helps students compare every university course, every apprenticeship and further education course – then apply successfully.

Local Champions Project . A huge thank you to the companies that supported our event on Friday 17th January; Nick and Craig from JGF Electrical services, Megan from Hochtief Murphy joint venture, Debbie from Healthy Living Centre, Grant and Kam from Sportacus, Jenny and Calice from Doubletree Hilton, Lyndsey from KPH Deconstruction Services Ltd, Jon at the Titan group, Tara from Priory News and Danny from Select Plant Hire.

We really value your support, as do our young people.

We will be holding another of these events in March, so do please contact me if you are interested in being part of the transformation of work experience.

We welcomed nine local companies to a breakfast meeting to help broaden our work experience to Year 10 and 12 students. Based upon the huge success of work experience at Select and Priory Mews we aim to multiple the efforts these companies put into making our students feel valued and respected. In turn these companies have reported how much value the experience added to their company and the CPD for staff was second to none.

It was great to have our local MP, Jim Dickson present so he could hear and see the efforts we are making to help our students have positive work opportunities that will in turn benefit our local area.

We heard directly from the students about how transformative their experience was for them. It has certainly inspired them to see a different future for themselves.

If you, or your business can help, please do get in touch!  Mrs G Tiddy – [email protected]

On a really positive note, students in Year 13 have submitted their UCAS applications as we look to our next adventures after leaving SL6 later this year. Myself, and others have been lucky enough to hear back from Universities and have received offers from our first choices!

This is a credit to our determination and hard work and taking every opportunity that SL6 has offered to us including career talks and inspiring work experience placements as well as completing our current course to the best of our ability. These offers are an incentive for myself and my cohort to work even harder to complete our work and meet our deadlines to the best standard we can produce, ensuring we achieve the best possible grades.

The North Kent Apprentice Event is now in its 4th year and being hosted by St John’s Secondary School in Gravesend this year on Wednesday 12th February 4-6pm.

The event has 36 employers, training providers and universities attending to advise on progression routes, training, careers and of course apprenticeships.

At last year’s event hosted by Wilmington Grammar School for Boys, there were over 700 visitors, making it the largest careers fair in the area.

Anyone is welcome to attend, young people and adults, just sign up using the link/QR code on the flier or here: www.kentchoices.info/12-02-25

Introducing … Miss Okoli who joins our Science Department as a Science Technician, supporting student learning with the preparation and delivery of practical lessons for all year groups. “My role as a science technician is allowing me to work in a scientific environment whilst contributing to the education of other young people. The careers support at Stone Lodge inspires the students to be ambitious and value learning as an important stepping stone to achieving their life goals.”

Mrs Gordon-Keyes Y10 GCSE Physics students have been exploring current, resistance and potential difference in energy within circuits. In this practical lesson, students investigated potential differences (or voltage) as a measure of energy, per unit of charge, transferred between two points in a circuit.

Miss Haynes’ Year 9 English students are deepening their creative writing skills whilst working on a war and conflict topic. Students have researched the conditions in the trenches from the soldiers’ perspective before completing their writing task; our aspiring journalists produced a series of compelling newspaper articles detailing the horrors of the trenches for a UK newspaper audience. Our budding authors opted to write an autobiographical piece imagining they were a soldier writing home from the trenches. Great work everyone!
